Some advice from Ricky Nixon, Managing Director - Flying Start International

There are many ways that you can become employed in the field of sports management and sports marketing. Work experience is the key, along with a university degree in an appropriate course. I believe that the key to securing employment is making sure your resume makes an impact and stands out from the rest. Make sure you make a point of difference. Highlight why you think you would make a difference to the company. Do your homework by researching the company and make the resume specific to the company. Gaining work experience within a company in the field is also important. It shows that you are serious and gives you invaluable contacts.

Flying Start receives hundreds of resumes each month from people wanting to work in this field. My view is a standard resume doesn't get you anywhere. Be creative and use initiative. Flying Start's current employees have studied a range of courses from a range of different universities.

The list is as follows:

Deakin University   DEAKIN UNIVERSITY
Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Sports Management
and Marketing, Sports Coaching and Administration

Victoria University   VICTORIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Bachelor of Arts in Sports Administration, Bachelor of Business

The University of Melbourne   MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY
Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy), Bachelor of Arts Law

RMIT University   RMIT UNIVERSITY
Bachelor of Arts (Marketing and Public Relations)

However some of our employees have had very different backgrounds and employers. They range from journalists, to talent scouts within the music industry, to ex-AFL players and sales people in radio and television. But obviously if you have a passion for a job in this field and are willing to put in the hard work, then anything is possible.
